[For Beginners] How to Choose a Dome Tent? Tips on Maintenance and Recommended Products

Dome tents are easy to set up and highly durable, making them the most recommended option for beginners.
However, with so many dome tents available from various outdoor brands, you may find it difficult to decide which one to choose.
In this article, we’ll explain in detail how to choose a dome tent and how to care for it. We’ll also introduce recommended dome tents and storage items that help keep your gear organized.
If you want to enjoy a comfortable camping experience with a dome tent that fits your camping style, please use this as a reference.
What Is a Dome Tent?

A "dome tent" is a type of tent shaped like a hemisphere. Typically, the frame consists of two poles that cross at the top.
Setting them up requires almost no special skills; even beginners can easily pitch one by following the instructions. Once you get the hang of it, you can even set up a large dome tent by yourself.
Because dome tents are hemispherical, they offer ample space near the ceiling, making them ideal for live performances.
Additionally, since they are “freestanding tents” that stand on their own without needing stakes or ropes, they are not only easy to set up but can also be moved easily if you want to change the location or orientation.
However, many dome tents tend to be cramped, whether they are single-room models or have an awning. For this reason, many people use a tarp in conjunction with the tent to create a living space, prioritizing protection from rain and sunlight.
Compared to pup tents (military-style tents), which also have a simple structure, dome tents offer superior livability and weather resistance, making them easy to handle even for beginners.
How to Choose a Dome Tent

When choosing a dome tent, keep the following six points in mind to find a product that suits your camping style and is easy to use.
- Number of Users
- High Ceiling
- Ease of Setup
- Functionality
- Water Resistance
- Portability
How to Choose #1: We recommend choosing a size that accommodates one extra person
Typically, tents are rated for a specific "number of users." Since this number is set to the bare minimum required for sleeping, purchasing a tent based on this rating may leave you feeling cramped.
If you want a more spacious experience, I recommend choosing a dome tent designed for "the actual number of users plus one."
Tip 2: A ceiling height of 180 cm ensures comfort
Dome tents are known for their spaciousness. Choosing a model with a high ceiling eliminates the feeling of confinement and makes your stay even more comfortable.
If the ceiling height is 180 cm or higher, even men can move around and get in and out smoothly.
Tip 3: Easy assembly makes it ideal for beginners
If you choose a dome tent designed for easy assembly, you can set it up without wasting time or effort.
For example, if the poles are color-coded with matching sleeves, you can easily follow the assembly process.
Additionally, there are products that can be set up simply by inflating them with an air pump, as well as tents with specially designed pole insertion pins that allow for one-person setup.
Tip 4: Check for functionality
When choosing a dome tent, be sure to check that it includes the features you need.
Two or more entrances are ideal
Dome tents with two or more entrances provide good ventilation and are comfortable even in the summer. Additionally, having multiple entrances allows you to retrieve your belongings without the hassle of taking off your shoes.
When you need to use the restroom in the middle of the night, you can simply step over anyone sleeping near the entrance and head to the opposite entrance.
A skirt provides peace of mind even during winter camping
The fabric attached to the bottom of the tent, creating a gap between the tent and the ground, is called a "skirt."
During winter camping, it prevents cold air from entering, helping to keep you warm, and during summer camping, it keeps bugs out.
Furthermore, when it rains, it helps keep the inside of the tent from getting soaked, so if you want to use your tent all year round, I recommend choosing one with a skirt.
Tents with ventilation make camping more comfortable
If a tent has ventilation (air vents), airflow inside the tent becomes smoother. During hot weather, it allows trapped heat and humidity to escape, helping to keep the inside of the tent comfortable.
Also, when the air inside the tent warms up, the temperature difference with the outside air increases, which can cause condensation. Having ventilation helps moderate the temperature difference between the inside and outside, reducing condensation.
Ventilation is extremely important when using kerosene heaters or stoves during winter camping. In addition to keeping the tent open, having ventilation provides an extra layer of protection against carbon monoxide poisoning.
No need for a tarp if it has a canopy
In the context of tents, a “canopy” refers to a “roof overhang” created by raising the entry panel or similar sections with poles.
If you have a dome tent where the entrance can be used as a canopy, you can use the area under the canopy as a living space, allowing you to enjoy camping without a tarp.
Tip 5: Pay Attention to Water Resistance
Water resistance is a numerical value that indicates how resistant the tent fabric is to water penetration. The higher the number, the more resistant it is to water. If the water resistance is too low, the tent may leak during prolonged heavy rain.
If a tent has a water resistance rating of 2,000mm or higher, you don’t need to worry about leaks as long as it doesn’t rain continuously.
However, if the water resistance is too high, it can cause the tent to feel stuffy and hot. If you plan to camp in the summer, I recommend choosing a tent with a water resistance of around 2,000mm.
How to Choose #6: Check the Tent’s Weight and Packed Size
For backpacking, touring, or camping while hiking, you need to keep your gear as compact and minimal as possible.
Also, if you mainly travel by car, you might consider sleeping in your vehicle in addition to camping in a tent. By visualizing your total luggage volume—including items needed for sleeping in the car—from the perspective of loading capacity and storage, you can choose gear that fits your needs without straining yourself.
Dome tents come in a wide range of sizes, from compact solo models to large ones suitable for groups.
Be sure to carefully check the tent’s weight and packed size to ensure it’s portable enough for your mode of transportation.
How to Care for a Dome Tent

The most important aspect of tent maintenance is “drying.” If moisture remains in the tent when you pack it away, it can cause mold or the coating to dissolve, making the tent sticky.
After camping, make sure to dry the tent thoroughly before packing it away. Dirt can also cause deterioration, so be sure to remove any dirt, grass, or insects after use.
Over time, the fabric’s water-repellent properties will weaken.
If you feel the water-repellent effect has weakened, we recommend spraying the tent with a water-repellent spray to restore its water-repellent properties.
Introducing TOKYO CRAFTS’ dome tents!
At TOKYO CRAFTS, new tents are being added to our lineup one after another.
Here, we’d like to introduce three tents with different styles.
Tunnel-style Dome Tent: "Tenbi Shelter"

TOKYO CRAFTS Tenbi Shelter” is a new type of tent that combines the best features of dome tents and tunnel-style tents.
Dome tents typically use a frame made by crossing two poles. However, the Tenbi Shelter is set up by crossing a third pole over two poles arranged in parallel, similar to a tunnel-style tent.
This unique structure allows it to combine the two key advantages of dome tents—"ease of setup"—and tunnel tents—"an open, spacious interior."
The name derives from the two "lighting panels" positioned on the roof. These panels also function as mesh windows, allowing sunlight to enter from above even when the tent is fully closed.
By attaching the separately sold 4-person inner tent, it can be used as a two-room tent. Furthermore, the front entrance can be raised using a separately sold pole to create a canopy, expanding the living space.
The TPU window is designed to cover not only the front but also the skylight, providing a sense of openness even during secluded camping trips and allowing you to enjoy the view from inside the tent.
Since it can be fully closed from the inside, you can quickly respond to sudden changes in weather.
Floor mats and groundsheets for the inner tent are also available, so please consider them based on your camping style.
Recommended for Duo Camping: "Habisol Duo Tent"

Next up is the "Habisol," a dome-shaped shelter designed for two people to enjoy the outdoors in comfort.
With a shape close to a hexagon, it features a design where cots are set up diagonally. By adding the optional inner tent with a divider, you can separate the sleeping areas and ensure privacy.
With a spacious design featuring a maximum width of approximately 4.1 m and a ceiling height of approximately 1.95 m, it provides a living space where two adults can relax comfortably. Five mesh windows ensure excellent ventilation, maintaining a comfortable environment while keeping insects out.
With a total of four entrances—two at the front and two at the back—it offers exceptional usability. Equipped with high waterproofing (2,000mm water column) and wind resistance, this tent is designed to support a comfortable outdoor lifestyle.
With optional extras like a living mat and TPU windows, you can customize it to suit your preferences and style.
The "Nitrover 2P": Combining Comfort and Lightweight Design

The "Nightranger 2P" is a compact dome tent ideal for solo to duo camping, redesigned for camping while retaining the specifications of a mountaineering tent.
An inner tent is included as standard, ensuring a comfortable sleeping space for up to two people. With a double-access design featuring entrances at both the front and rear, and a spacious vestibule, you can use one side as a gear storage area or living space, allowing for flexible usage.
With a maximum interior height of 110 cm, it feels less cramped, and the maximum opening width of 180 cm creates a sense of openness.
Its freestanding three-cross-frame structure allows for quick setup and takedown even with the inner tent and optional groundsheet attached.
With its compact packed size, this tent is ideal for touring and day camping.
Choose from two colors: gray and black.
Items to Help Keep Your Campsite Tidy
Next, we’ll introduce TOKYO CRAFTS items that pair well with dome tents. We’ve selected storage items in particular to help you create a neatly organized campsite.
Cord Unit

The "Cord Unit" can be used as a mini table, side table, or a spot to place small items. Setup and storage are simple, requiring just one action.
You can connect this product with other compatible items vertically, horizontally, or stack them on top of each other, allowing you to enjoy various configurations.
By stacking “Bucket Shelf Mesh” units or hanging “Multi Bags” underneath the tabletop, you can create your own custom storage shelf.
You can also connect Cord Units vertically or horizontally to create a family table or a traditional Japanese hearth table.
With a variety of expansion items now available—such as firewood holders, metal containers, multi-frames, and soft coolers—this is a series you’ll want to keep adding to.

Gear Bunker

The Gear Bunker is a “hybrid container” that combines a sturdy frame with flexible fabric.
Designed to stack up to two units high, it maintains stability even when stacked while maximizing storage capacity. With openings on both the top and front, you can quickly access necessary gear even while it’s loaded in a car trunk or at a campsite, significantly reducing the hassle of loading and unloading.
With its high storage capacity, it’s suitable for a wide range of scenarios, from solo camping to family camping. Belt loops are positioned on the sides for conveniently attaching carabiners and small items.
It is compatible with the Cord Unit; you can attach the top board to the top to use it as a table, or connect multiple units together.
Bucket Shelf Mesh

The "Bucket Shelf Mesh" is a great addition for storage at your campsite.
Its basic design is a storage unit with legs that can be placed anywhere without worrying about the ground conditions. By flipping the legs up to the top, it can also be used as a basket with a handle. It’s easy to carry to your favorite spots, such as next to a fire pit or cooking area.
Additionally, stacking two Bucket Shelf Mesh units creates a two-tier storage shelf, and placing the compatible "Cord Unit" on top allows it to be used as under-table storage.
The storage section is made of mesh fabric, so it accommodates items of any shape. The mesh fabric is also machine washable, ensuring it stays hygienic. It’s highly recommended for storing cooking utensils and tableware.
Float Case

We call these convenient storage cases for small items like cooking utensils, seasonings, and campfire gear “Organizers.” TOKYO CRAFTS Float Case” is a product designed to eliminate the minor frustrations often associated with organizers.
Do you ever struggle to find a place to put your organizer next to a fire pit or on a mini table? It’s especially tricky when the ground is wet.
Since the Float Case is an organizer with legs, you can place it anywhere. You can set it directly on the ground without worry, even in wet areas like cooking stations.
It also comes with parts designed to hold S-hooks or carabiners, so you can hang it from hooks or the side of a table.
We recommend using it in combination with the Connection Belt, which allows you to prop the Float Case upright in a mountain shape for added convenience.
