[Guide to Choosing a TC Tarp] Discover Why They’re Popular, Different Types, and Recommended Products!
Why TC Tarp Material Is Popular
In recent years, “TC fabric” has been gaining popularity as a material for tarps.
At campsites, tarps are incredibly useful for providing shade and shelter from the rain, as well as for connecting to tents to create an outdoor living space. But did you know that choosing the right material is actually crucial?
TC fabric, considered ideal for tarps and tents, is a blend of Tetron (a polyester-based fiber and a trademark of Toray) and cotton.
This material was jointly developed by Teijin and Toray, two major Japanese chemical manufacturers, and was named "TC fabric" after the initials of both companies.
TC fabric excels in fire resistance, heat resistance, and light blocking, making it ideal for outdoor use all year round. It is the perfect material for tarps and is highly recommended for anyone considering purchasing one.
Many manufacturers offer a wide variety of TC fabric tarps, so you may find it difficult to choose.
To help you choose the best tarp for your needs, we’ll cover the characteristics of TC fabric, the different types of tarps available, key selection tips, and our recommended TC tarps.
Excellent fire resistance allows for campfires nearby
One of the key characteristics of TC fabric is its excellent fire resistance. While polyester alone is flammable, the addition of cotton makes it much more flame-resistant—this is its greatest advantage.
When camping, there are many situations where fire is used, such as campfires, BBQs, and lanterns.
Therefore, TC fabric—which resists the spread of flames even if sparks land on it—is ideal for tarps.
High thermal insulation and light-blocking properties ensure a comfortable experience
Another appealing feature of TC fabric is its high thermal insulation and light-blocking properties.
The purpose of a tarp is to block sunlight and create shade in outdoor environments, as well as to protect against sudden rain.
Because TC fabric contains cotton, it offers excellent heat resistance and light-blocking properties, shielding you from the intense summer sun and creating deep shade.
Additionally, the high water resistance of polyester makes it highly rain-resistant. Furthermore, it dries faster than 100% cotton, so it dries quickly even after getting wet in the rain.
Resistant to condensation and easy to maintain
One of the biggest concerns when using tents or screen tarps for winter camping is condensation. The most effective way to combat condensation is to choose materials that are resistant to it.
TC fabric is characterized by its excellent breathability, which makes it resistant to condensation, and its quick-drying properties make it easy to dry.
Types of Tarps
Tarps come in various shapes, each with its own characteristics, advantages, and disadvantages. It is important to understand the differences between them before making a purchase.
Hexa Tarp
As the name "Hexa Tarp" suggests (from the Greek word "hexa," meaning "six"), its main feature is that the fabric forms a hexagonal shape. It is the most popular type.
You can set up poles to use it as a "roof," or set up poles on one side and stake down the other to use it like a wall—allowing you to adjust it to suit the weather or your mood.
Even when arranged, it maintains a sharp silhouette, adding a stylish touch to your campsite. However, a drawback is that the area providing shade or shelter from the rain decreases when you adjust the setup.
Square Tarp
The "Square Tarp" is a very simple square-shaped tarp. The rectangular type is also known as a "Rectangular Tarp."
It can be set up as a simple roof, creating a spacious area of shade and shelter from the rain, while offering an exceptional sense of openness.
Because it is easy to set up, it is often used at sports days, festivals, and other events. Many people have likely seen them in places other than campsites.
The advantage is that its simple structure makes it easy for beginners to set up, but the downside is that it becomes heavy due to its large surface area.
Wing Tarp
A wing tarp is a small, diamond-shaped tarp. Compared to other tarps, it is characterized by its small, compact, and lightweight fabric.
Because it’s lightweight, it packs down small, and since one person can set it up alone, it’s ideal for solo camping when you want to keep your gear as compact as possible.
You can enjoy various setups depending on the number of poles and how you tension the ropes. However, keep in mind that because the fabric is small, the area it provides for shade or rain protection is limited.
Screen Tarp
Unlike other tarps that consist only of a roof, a "screen tarp" features side walls, allowing you to create a private space.
With a ceiling and walls, it looks like a tent, but unlike a tent, it lacks a "floor" (floor sheet).
If the walls are made of mesh, they protect you not only from the sun and rain but also from insects. You can even lie down inside if you set up a mat or cot.
The walls block views from the outside, creating a relaxing space, but the downside is that this reduces the sense of openness. They are also bulkier and heavier, and tend to be more expensive.
One-Touch Tarp
A “one-touch tarp” is a tarp that can be easily set up by a single person. It’s perfect not only for camping but also for events like barbecues and flea markets.
Since it stands on its own without pegs or ropes, you can easily set it up on asphalt or concrete, and its simple design makes it easy for one person to assemble.
While it’s easy to use, the downside is that it’s heavier than other tarps because it has a frame.
How to Choose a TC Tarp
Once you understand the basic types of TC tarps and have found a few options that match your needs and preferences, it’s time to learn the key points to check when selecting a tarp.
Check various factors such as size, weight, packability, accessories, color, and design.
Tip 1: Choose the Size Based on the Number of Users
If a tent is the bedroom of your camping setup, then a TC tarp is the living room. "Size" is crucial for spending a comfortable time while blocking out the sun and rain and enjoying the natural breeze and the scent of the trees.
Be sure to purchase a size that suits the number of people going on the camping trip.
As a general guideline, for a group of 1–3 people, we recommend a TC tarp with sides measuring 3–4 meters; for 4–6 people, one with sides around 5 meters. If it’s too small, even with chairs set up, it will feel cramped, and you won’t be able to relax.
A typical campsite is 10m x 10m. If you need to fit a tent, TC tarp, and car, a size of up to about 5m x 5m should fit comfortably.
Tip #2: Prioritize Weight and Packability for Easy Portability
TC tarps combine the best features of both polyester and cotton, making them highly functional with benefits like fire resistance, insulation, and shade. However, because they contain cotton, they are heavier than tarps made solely of polyester.
When purchasing a TC tarp, be sure to check the weight of the tarp itself. For small tarps intended for solo camping, a weight of around 600g is a good guideline.
For use with a large group, the general guideline is around 1 kg. Also, be sure to check the total weight, including not just the tarp itself but also the weight of the stakes, poles, and ropes.
Furthermore, choosing a model that packs down as compactly as possible makes it easier to carry and more convenient.
Tip #3: Check if Poles Are Included
If the tarp collapses in the wind, it will ruin your camping trip. It’s important to verify that the poles are sturdy enough to withstand wind.
Some TC tarps are sold with poles included, but in very inexpensive sets, the poles are usually not very durable.
When purchasing, even if the price is slightly higher, opt for a set that includes all the necessary items for setup—such as sturdy poles, pegs, and ropes. While the initial cost may be higher, it will ultimately last longer.
Tip 4: Match the color and design to your campsite for a cohesive look
Even small TC tarps stand out because they cover a significant area when set up. When choosing one, consider not only practicality but also design and color.
Coordinating the design and color with items like tents, chairs, tables, and shelves creates a sense of unity in your campsite, resulting in a stylish overall look.
